Getting Started
Making a new Space
You need a Space before you can write notes. A Space is a folder you choose. Glyph stores Markdown notes inside it.
Welcome screen: Open Folder
When no Space is open, Glyph shows the welcome screen. The main button is Open Folder.
- Click Open Folder.
- In the Select a space folder dialog, pick an existing folder or create a new one in the system picker.
- Confirm.
Glyph opens that folder as your Space. Use this when you already have notes somewhere, or when you created an empty folder in Finder first.
Create Space
Use Create Space (Cmd+Shift+N) to make a new Space from Glyph.
- Run Create Space from the menu, command palette (
Cmd+K), or the shortcut. - Choose a location and name in the Select a space folder dialog.
- Confirm.
Glyph sets that folder as the Space and you can start writing.
Open Folder on the welcome screen and Create Space both end in a folder on disk. Create Space is the dedicated command when you want a new workspace from inside the app.
Open Space
With Glyph already running, use Open Space (Cmd+O) to pick a folder. The dialog title is Select a space folder. You can open a folder that already has Markdown notes, or an empty folder you want to fill.
Opening a Space replaces the Space in the main window. Close the current Space first if you prefer a clean switch, or open another path when you are ready to move on.
Recent Spaces
Glyph remembers folders you opened. Open Recent Spaces from the menu to jump back to a past Space without browsing the disk again.
If the list is empty, you see No Recent Spaces. Open a folder once and it will show up next time.
First open: Welcome to Glyph.md
The first time Glyph sets up a Space, it can add Welcome to Glyph.md at the root. Open that note for a short orientation. You can keep it, edit it, or delete it like any other note.
You can open the welcome note again later with Welcome Note from the command palette or Help menu when available.
Open previous tabs
Under Settings → General → Startup, turn on Open previous tabs if you want Glyph to restore the tabs you left open the last time you used this Space.
With the setting off, the Space opens without restoring that tab set. With it on, Glyph brings back the notes you had open so you can continue where you left off.
Typical first session
- Launch Glyph.
- Click Open Folder, or run Create Space (
Cmd+Shift+N). - Pick the folder in Select a space folder.
- Skim Welcome to Glyph.md if it appears.
- Create a note with New Note (
Cmd+N) and start writing.
Tips
- One folder per project keeps backups and Git Sync remotes simple.
- Point Glyph at a folder you already sync if you manage files yourself. Glyph writes local Markdown; it does not require a Glyph cloud account for basic notes.
- Shortcuts (
Cmd+O,Cmd+Shift+N, and others) are remappable in Settings → Shortcuts.
