Split editors and tabs

Split the editor when you want two notes visible at once. Each pane has its own tabs, so you can keep a reference open while writing elsewhere.

Create a split

1. Open a Space and a note.
2. Open the command palette with Cmd+K.
3. Run Split Editor Left, Split Editor Right, Split Editor Above, or Split Editor Below.
4. Open a note in the new pane.

The command creates an empty pane in the chosen direction. Click inside a pane to make it the target for your next action.

Drag a tab into a split

Drag an open tab toward an edge of an editor pane. Drop it on the edge target to move it into a split on that side.

Drop the tab in the center of another pane to move it into that pane’s tab group. You can also reorder tabs within a group by dragging them along the tab bar.

Open a note by dragging

Drag a Markdown note from the file tree onto a pane’s edge to open it in a split. These pane drop targets accept Markdown workspace notes. Folders and other file types do not use the same split-drop flow.

Resize panes

Drag the divider between panes to change their size. Splits can sit inside other splits, so you can arrange notes side by side and above or below each other.

Give your draft most of the width and keep a smaller reference pane beside it. Use fewer panes when the text columns become too narrow.

Restore your workspace

Glyph stores the split layout, pane tabs, and focused pane with the Space’s workspace session. Enable Settings → General → Open previous tabs to return to the saved session.

Files that no longer exist are left out when the session is restored. With Open previous tabs off, pinned tabs can still return.

Splits and separate windows

A split stays inside the main Glyph window. Open in New Window opens a separate Markdown editing window instead. Use splits for notes you want arranged together, or a separate window when you want to place a note elsewhere on your desktop.
